3 times the gain of a TS type pedal. Past about 50%, the Blue Boy gets quite mean! I always found that TS type pedals never have quite enough gain. For some lead, or heavy rhythm situations, a cranked TS just doesn't quite get there. By increasing the gain of the Blue Boy, there's now plenty of gain on tap. The clipping architecture of the Blue Boy is designed to have less 'pop' from the string attack, giving the Blue Boy less of a compressed feel. The famous JRC4558D opamp, for a super-warm tone.
The Blue Boy is designed to work with humbuckers as well as with single-coil pickups. The old TS style doesn't work very well with humbuckers. The Blue Boy has the same tone control as the Tube Zone, which allows you to balance highs and lows. As you turn down the tone control, you decrease the highs, and boost the lows. As you turn up the tone control, you boost the highs and cut the lows. This give you effectively the same functionality as s multi-band EQ. This is a much better design than the typical low-pass filter. With the volume control cranked, you can get up to a 7V peak to peak output signal. That will seriously overdrive a tube amp!
The Blue Boy has been designed to run off higher voltage supplies than a standard pedal. In fact, the Blue Boy can run off a 25V DC power supply with no problems. This gives you a huge amount of headroom. The Blue Boy is true bypass, featuring a heavy-duty 3PDT footswitch. A super-bright yellow LED. A DC plug for powering the Blue Boy from an external power supply (anywhere from 9 to 25V DC). This is exactly the same as the boss-style power supply.
Professionally power-coated and silk-screened die-cast aluminium enclosure. This is a tiny case, by the way. It's 11*6*3 cm, which means that it won't take up a lot of pedal-board real-estate. The Blue Boy was a resounding success. But wanting to continually improve the design, MI took the Blue Boy design to the next logical step. The most obvious thing to do was to make the internal controls external. The logic behind this was the same as that for the new Tube Zone, namely to help musicians who use multiple rigs, or gigging musicians who have to rely on 'house rigs' to match the Blue Boy to these different rigs. There's now no need to open up the pedal. Also, The output volume was further increased, and the voicing control mutated into a dedicated midrange control.
