Did you want to play a Strat, Tele or Les Paul? A Marshall amp, or a Fender? Boss, DOD or Ibanez pedals? Ernie Ball or D’Addario strings? Sure, some players were playing different stuff, but the vast majority of guitarists were playing the same few pieces of gear. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThen something happened. Small pedal makers, luthiers, and amp companies started popping up, changing the rules, and challenging the status quo. They made better gear. Gear that got even closer to that sound in your head — \u003ci\u003eyour\u003c\/i\u003e tone.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eAs a player myself, I went bananas. I got into tweaking every aspect of my rig — pedals, tubes, pickups — all in search of a better tone, \u003ci\u003emy\u003c\/i\u003e tone.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eBut one day, like a lightbulb, it dawned on me. I had spent years dialing in every aspect of my rig — and I had never even considered my strings. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eI won’t say what brand I used to play, but I will tell you that I used to change them every week because they’d lose their tone after three days. And the more I thought about it, they just didn’t \u003ci\u003efeel\u003c\/i\u003e right either. I didn’t know why, but I knew they could be better. So I set off to make a better set of guitar strings.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eI went full geek, tearing into every piece of information I could find about strings — metal composition, winding techniques, tension measurements — and all along the way I noted things that could be done better (hint: everything could be better).\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWell now, years of blood sweat and tears later — and with a bit of help from some amazing people who’ve been doing this since before I was born — we’ve made that dream of making better sounding, playing, and feeling guitar strings into a reality.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWhen we started, I thought we might get a thousand loyal players to play our strings, and we’d be all set. Well, we got that thousand, and they told another thousand, and it kept going from there. Half the time, I’ve felt like I’m just trying to keep up with all of it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eSo to my earlier point about how this used to be my company. Well, technically, it still is. But it doesn’t really feel like it. Through all that, we’ve discovered two inherent problems in a typical 10-46 “Light” set: there are big dips in tension on both the 2\u003csup\u003end\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand 6\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003estrings (.013 and .046, respectively). So, with our\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBalanced 10s\u003c\/em\u003e, we fix all that by using a .0135 and a .048 instead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result is a set of strings that plays evenly across the entire fretboard and intonates better. Why some other companies make them that way, I honestly couldn’t tell you—but never fear! We’ve fixed all that for you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSee, the issue on most sets is that the .011 has far too little tension to balance with the .009 and the .016 has far too much tension. So, with our Balanced 9s we fix all that by using a .012 and a .015 instead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result is a set of strings that plays evenly across the entire fretboard and intonates better when set up properly. We fix the top end by subbing in a .0135 for the typical .013, bringing perfect balance to all the plain strings. Then on bottom, we drop the gauge of the 5\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003estring to a .040 (from the typical .042) to pull everything evenly together down there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese two tweaks give our Heavy Bottom 10s great balance on both the plain and wound strings, with extra tension on the bottom for heavier players—or just those who are after a thicker bottom end sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSound good?
